Voice is the biggest gift of a god & not so many people are blessed with this. Many people like you understand the value of having a good voice & we try to maintain it by doing voice and breathing exercises. However, unknowingly we damage our voice by drinking or eating something which is not good for a voice.
Now, you must have started thinking that, am I doing the same things wrong with my voice? Am I am eating something which is not good for my voice? What should I eat to maintain my voice? Well, no need to worry about it because I will be sharing the list of good food for a voice which you can follow to maintain your voice.
So here are my Good foods for a voice..
Your voice performs well when your throat is hydrated. Staying well hydrated is key to a healthy voice, according to numerous vocal coaches. If you are not well-hydrated the vocal folds can become irritated more quickly, leading to redness and swelling. For physicians, this is called a ‘predisposing condition’ – leading more easily to vocal fold changes and issues”.
While ensuring you drink enough fluids throughout the day is key, you can also increase your fluid consumption through the foods you eat. Singers or speakers use up more water if they are sweating during performances, or simply working in a hot, dry venue. It’s easy to become dehydrated without even knowing it. So drink water as much as you can and keep your body hydrated. It keeps your throat and vocal chords in tip-top shape. You can follow the checklist for your daily liquid consumption.
Most experts recommend six to eight glasses of water a day, but there is no “magic amount”. Everyone’s body is different and glands work in unique ways. As a general rule of thumb, Scherer says: “The more you use up water, the more you have to ingest to maintain a good balance”.
Your Water Consumption Checklist:
- Drink six to eight cups a day (but this is not a “magic number”)
- Adjust the amount of water you consume to take into account sweating and caffeine
- Have enough so that you ‘pee pale’
- Room temperature is better than hot or cold
- Sip rather than glug
- Don’t wait until you are thirsty to drink
One useful voice care tip is for us to have a glass of lukewarm water beside us whenever we are singing or performing, or just to drink some warm water before we sing! This helps to soothe our vocal cords and our throat, and also moistens the tissues and muscles involved, reducing the risk of vocal damage.
Who doesn’t know the benefit of whole grains? These foods contain high levels of Vitamins A, C, and E – Vitamin A helps cells regenerate normally, Vitamin C helps prevent the common cold and sore throat as well as improve immune functions of the body, and Vitamin E is a powerful anti-oxidant that protects cell membranes and also improves immune functions of the body.
Two types of vitamin A can be used by your body, preformed vitamin A, known as retinol, and beta-carotene, which the body transforms into vitamin A. It is possible to get too much-preformed vitamin A. Vitamin A from beta-carotene, on the other hand, is not toxic at any level. Increasingly, supplements are using beta-carotene rather than preformed vitamin A. Fruits and vegetables containing vitamin A are canned pumpkin, cantaloupe, mango, squash, sweet potato, spinach, and carrots.

There are eight types of antioxidants that fall under the vitamin E umbrella. Your body actively uses only one. Vitamin E acts as an antioxidant that intercepts free radicals and destroys them. It also plays a part in platelet aggregation and dilation of blood vessels. Synthetic vitamin E has only half the biological activity of vitamin E found in food. Fruits containing vitamin E are mangoes, avocados, and apples. Vegetables with vitamin E are sweet potatoes, asparagus, tomatoes, turnips, and spinach.
A small spoonful of honey in your water or decaf tea can help coat and soothe your throat. It’s nice first thing in the morning on show days, or as the last thing you drink at night after performing. Honey is still mostly sugar, so don’t go too crazy with it. But it’s uniquely good at preventing and soothing vocal strain, and it’s got antibacterial and antimicrobial qualities, so it can help keep the bad, sore-throat bugs away.
Grab that orange or that apple before you go for their juiced versions. Whole fruits have a lot more crucial nutritional value than juices do. You want to chew your fruit, as they contain fiber, vitamins, and more good stuff that helps your body absorb it all better. Juices tend to be more sugar and water than anything else, so they go straight to your bloodstream and wear you out quicker.
Nuts are a great snack & Good foods for a voice. Singers or speakers to have on hand at shows. Opt for unsalted or lightly salted options, if possible. And be sure to wash them down with a swig of room temperature water to keep the salt from drying out your throat.
Chicken & Fish
Just like chicken, fish is a lean source of protein. Baking or broiling fish in the oven allows you to use less oil than frying, and while it’s cooking you’ll have time to get some fresh veggies ready on the side.
Protein is critical for singers. It fills us up and gives us the energy we need to keep singing for a long time. Chicken is lean protein. It will fill you up, burn longer, and keep your vocal cords from being overwhelmed with fat and oils.
